Here is quick summary about defending straight strikes from various positions, in Krav Maga we focus on timeline so we will aways choose to move away or kick from distance, but in a fight or when surprised this is not always possbile. I mentioned in class this week that the further away an attacker the simlier the solution.

Defending Straight Strikes

General Principles:

  • Use the correct option from the correct distance. There are earlier stages of the timeline like running away, use of common objects, kicking are prefered to hand and body defenses.
  • When in a fight hands up, focus on opponents chest and escape when it is safe to do so.
  • Run to safety, not away from danger.
  • Always scan and move.

Defenses Against Straight Strikes:

  • There are many options and we will highlight some of these in this post. Options below related to the video and what was covered in class.
    • Option 01: Slipping – When in a fight, take your head off the centre line by slipping to the attackers dead side (the majority of the time) and out of the channel. A counter attack can be added when exiting.
    • Option 02: Blading – When in a fight, this refered to a side stance and involes turning you front shoulder in, from fighting stance you may be limited to one option here (one side). A counter strike or hand defense (insdie swwep for example) should be added are you are in the attackers channel (or live side).
    • Option 03: Active Shielding – In the video this is done with two hands but it can be done with one, this is a reaction and you may not have been ready, where possilbe turn the body a little to deflect and ensure you look through the gap in your arms. Add counterstrikes or move away as fast as possbile.
    • Option 04: Closing Arrow (or double inside defese) – this is another reactive hand defense, your hand may have been down or mid body and you react by bringing both hands in towrad the centre. Take your head off the line and viualise both hands coming together. This may result in a defesne and a stike or a slip and a control by grabbing and either are good options. A counter attack should be used here.
  • We have other options like the inside hand defense and the insdie foreare defense but these have been covered in previous videos.

This Week:

We are heading into the last training day of November, so we plan to run a number of summary drills with determination. We have covered alot of topics and will recap these at a high level.
