Here is a list a frequently asked questions. These questions have come through from social media and email queries.

Q: How much is membership?
A: 70 euro per month. This includes 2 classes per week which is 8-10 classes per month. Please contact us if you need more details.

Q: Do you offer pay-as-you-go classes?
A: Due to the nature of our training it is important that we know who is training when and where, and that we can keep track of everybody for safety and insurance purposes. We also believe that to get any real benefit from training you need to be training regularly, at least once a week and preferably more. For these reasons we only operate on a membership basis and do not offer pay-as-you-go-training.

Q: Can I drop in for a free session to see if I like it?
A: It’s important that we know who we have training with us at all times to ensure that we are covered for insurance. For this reason, we do not accept drop in students. If you want to give it a try please contact us in advance to arrange a introductory session.

Q: Where are the classes?
A: Monread Community Centre, Naas, County Kildare – click here for directions.

Q: When do classes start?
A: Monday the 2nd of September at 8pm.

Q: What is the class timetable?
A: Weekly classes on Monday at 8pm and Wednesday at 8:30pm.

Q: What should I wear to class?
A: Jogging pants, trainers and a t-shirt.

Q: What should I wear to training in the future?
A: The most important things to consider here are comfort and safety. Groin protection is a must for both men and women. Mouth guards can sometimes be useful (essential when sparring). As for clothing, long trousers are preferably to shorts although shorts are also fine. KMG (Krav Maga Global) make an excellent pair of training trousers and most students eventually train in these. Any comfortable t-shirt is fine Comfortable training shoes should be worn on your feet. Watches and jewellery must be removed or if unable to be removed must be taped up or covered.

Q: Do I need equipment?
A: No equipment is required, bring a small towel and water.

Q: What can I expect to learn at Krav Maga Self Defense?
A: The plan is to get fit, get strong, learn to move well, learn to fight and have fun.

Q: What is the minimum age?
A: 16 years is the minimum age.

Q: I’ve never done martial arts before, can I do Krav Maga?
A: Our classes are suitable for complete beginners. Everything we train is taught from scratch and our instructor will guide you every step of the way.

Q: I have no experience in anything like this, will I be able to train?
A: Many students have never done any kind of martial arts or self-defence before. Even basic things like punching and kicking are completely new to a lot of our members when they first start training. Our instructor will teach you exactly what to do so you will pick things up very quickly and develop at your own pace.

Q: How fit do you need to be?
A: Krav Maga was designed to be suitable for everybody, not just elite athletes or professional fighters. Whatever your current fitness level you can train entirely at your own pace. Even if it’s been years since you last did any physical exercise our training sessions are perfectly adaptable to you. Having said that, after a few months of training with us you will notice a huge improvement in your fitness.

Q: What exactly does a typical training session consist of?
A: All our training sessions start with a warm-up. This is important to prepare the body and the mind for the training. After the warm up you will begin working on the specific subject of the lesson. Obviously this varies from week to week. Sometimes it will be a particular self-defence situation, like how to escape from various holds or chokes. Other times we may work on more general fighting skills like punching and kicking. Often we will combine elements of different topics into a single session.

Throughout the session you will be working with a partner (or sometimes a small group), taking it in turns to practice the various techniques. The session will end with some kind of ‘summary drill’ where we will put what we’ve learnt into a more realistic setting and add a level of stress to make it more realistic.

Students find the sessions very enjoyable and also a great workout.

Q: Is it dangerous? Will I get hurt?
A: At Naas Krav Maga safety in training is our number one priority. It’s the nature of an activity like Self Defense that accidents can happen but as long as you follow the instructor’s guidance and respect your training partner you will be fine. Injuries more than the occasional bruise are very rare.

Q: Is the training rough?
A: The main goal of training with us is to prepare yourself for the reality of a violent conflict. To this end it is inevitable that there is physical contact between you and your training partner. However, it is not the idea to get hurt in training and so the level of physicality should be suitable to you and your partner. Safety is the number one concern in training and we do all we can to ensure that training is done in a safe and responsible manner.

Q: Is Krav Maga suitable for women?
A: Krav Maga is a self-defence system that anybody can use. It does not rely on size or strength to overcome your attacker, but simple instinctive techniques that anybody can learn. It is a perfect system for women to learn in order to become safer and be able to defence themselves.

Q: What if I have some disability or physical limitation? Can I still do Krav Maga?
A: Krav Maga is suitable for anybody. There are plenty of students who have some form of disability or limitation and still train and progress very well in the system. Krav Maga can be adapted to suit your individual limitations.

Q: How often should I train?
A: Like anything in life, the more you put into training the better you will become. Of course, everybody has different amounts of time that they can invest in training, but to really get the benefit and make progress you should train at least once a week as a minimum, although we recommend at least 2 sessions per week if you’re serious about developing skill, retaining knowledge, and making real progress.

Q: Do you do sparring?
A: Yes. Sparring regularly is an important part of any self-defence training. However, in keeping with our emphasis on safety in training, sparring is introduced gradually and is done at an appropriate level for each student.

Q: What time should I arrive?
A: For your first session try and arrive at least 10 minutes before the training starts as there is some paperwork to fill out and also this will give you a chance to ask any questions you may have. Once you are a regular member it’s best to be there at least 5-10 minutes before it starts, to give you time to change your shoes, put on protective equipment etc. Please try your best not to be late as this can disrupt the class which is unfair on the other students.

Q: What do I need to bring with me?
A: For your first session all you need to bring is yourself and plenty of water to drink as you’ll be working up a sweat and it’s important to stay hydrated.

Once you start training regularly, you’ll need to bring your protective gear (groin protection, mouth guard, etc.), and if you have boxing gloves bring these as well. All other equipment will be provided by Naas Krav Maga.

Q: Is there parking at the training venues?
A: Yes, our current venue has parking provided.

Q: Does Krav Maga have a belt/grading system?
A: Krav Maga Global does not use a belt system. Instead, we use a patch system of levels to keep track of students’ progress. There are 5 practitioner levels, P1-P5, 5 graduate levels (mostly instructors) G1-G5, and 5 expert levels (high level instructors) E1-E5. Please see the KMG Grading System page for more information. Q: How often can I grade?
A: Depending on the level you’re grading for, a minimum of 6-8 months consistent, regular training, is required between grades. A minimum number of training hours is also required, and grading eligibility is at the discretion of the instructor.
