When confronted by an attacker, it’s important to understand that if you have exhausted tactical options such as trying to escape, using your voice and maintaining distance, striking may sometimes be required.

We focus on strikes that have the most impact, are easiest to learn and make sense in a situation where your primary goal is to get away.

Our team refers to the combination in the video below as “The Utility Combination.” It incorporates several of our core principles:

• Hard parts of your body against soft parts of the attacker
• The right strike at the right range
• Uncomplicated, effective and efficient techniques
• Techniques that can be adapted quickly to the situation

In the video, we demonstrate the jab, cross, horizontal elbow and regular knee. Individually, these are effective strikes; combined, they provide a straightforward sequence that can also be adapted depending on what is happening. Please note the jab and cross maybe palm heel strikes which are extremely effective.

If your hand is held, if your left hand is grabbed, or if your right hand is controlled, the combination can be adjusted to suit the situation.

Our preference is always to break grips, create space and run. But sometimes, that simply isn’t an option.

In future posts, we’ll look at the stress response to threatening situations (fight, flight and freeze) exploring the mental side of these encounters and how we can prepare for them.
